Kashayas (Kwathas) are the basic form of medicine in Ayurvedic system. Kashayas are the aqueous extract of drugs i.e. decoction prepared by boiling the drugs with water and concentrating it. They are also the basic ingredient in the preparation of medicated oils & ghees, Lehyas, pills etc. Unlike in the ancient times, where the physicians used to prepare kashayas personally for their patients or patients prepare it themselves, in reply to the need of modern man they are prepared in bulk and is available in ready to use form. |

The medicinal ingredients are taken as per the respective yogams (Recipies) are cleaned, washed, pounded and boiled in required quantity of water. When the quantity of water is reduced to quarter portion, filter off the kashaya and concentrated again to required volume, which is then packed in cleaned bottles hygenically after adding necessary quantity of preservative.Generally the method of administration is 5 to 15 ml. with thrice quantity of boiled and cooled water, twice daily in empty stomach or as directed by the physician. |

Medicated Oils are the processed emulsion of medicinal lipids dissolved in oil medium. They are prepared by the incorporation of various medicinal ingredients in oils as per the respective yogams (Recipies). Oils are mixed with kwatha, juice of medicnal plants, kalkas as required, boiled and processed at a medium temperature.
The processing method varies depending on the mode of administration. Special care is payed to the oil, which is taken for internal use. Generally the medicated oils are prepared in gingelly oil unless it is mentioned accordingly as Coconut oil or Castor oil whereas kuzhambu is prepared with ghee in addition to Gingelly oil and castor oil in a definite ratio. |

| |
Lehyas are the medicinal preparations in which sugar, sugar candy or jaggery are used as the basic ingredients. It mainly consists of three parts: First part is the Kwatha, water or juices of medicinal plants as per the requirement. Second part is the medium used i.e. sugar, sugar candy or jaggery and the third part is the powder of the drugs. In addition to it Ghee/GingeUy Oil/Coconut milk,” Pulp of fruits etc are also added as advised in the respective formulations.

The volatile fraction of the powdered drugs are protected by the sugar molecules which also act as a preservative in the preparation. The temperature has to be maintained carefully throughout the preparation as excess heat may cause unwanted hardness and less heat keeps the preparation in tue fluid stage.
